Dr. Nik Sharma, MB ChB, PhD, MRCP (Neurology), FRCP (UK)

Dr. Nik Sharma is a physician-scientist and technologist whose career bridges medicine, computational biology, and entrepreneurship. After teaching himself to code at age 11 and selling his first software at 15, he earned his medical degree from the University of Liverpool. While completing his clinical training, he built and repaired computers to support his burgeoning interest in data science.
He went on to receive a PhD from the University of Cambridge, where he mastered additional programming languages and neuroimaging methods. His postdoctoral work was supported by an NRSA Fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, where he developed scalable approaches for analyzing high-dimensional biological data on high-performance computing platforms.
Dr. Sharma then served as a Principal Investigator at the Institute of Neurology, UCL, leading a lab focused on machine-learning applications in neuroscience, and practiced as a consultant neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London.
In 2019, he co-founded BioCorteX with Dr. Mo Alomari to harness interactions between bacteria and pharmaceuticals, with the goal of unlocking more effective therapeutics across drug development. Backed by Draper and Sofinnova Partners, BioCorteX is initially targeting immune-oncology before expanding into multiple therapeutic areas—aiming to dramatically improve success rates and reduce the $244 billion annual cost of drug development.
